My tortoise's aren't particularly long, but they are longer than they were. I'm used to having to trim the claws on animals such as my rabbit, guinea pigs and chickens. Does the same need to be done with my tortoise?

  1. It shouldn't be necessary. Your tort should be outside daily and allowed to dig etc. which should keep its claws down.

  2. If the claws are long, make sure he has the opportunity to dig and climb and they will shorten by themselves.

    Hope this helps.

  3. the claws on a spur thigh are quite long, but as long as they don't hinder the tortoise when it walks i would leave them alone, you can trim the claws if they get too long but you do need to be careful that you can see the quick of the claw as if this is cut it can bleed quite a lot, i usually trim claws when the tortoise comes out of hibernation as they are still sleepy and it is less stressful for them i also have a couple of concrete paving stones in their enclosure just before their hut, so they have to walk over them to get in the hut, this usually maintains the claws naturally, the main problem i have with claws is when they grow as they are hibernating which is why i cut them when they wake so they are ready for their summer walk about, best of luck with your tortoise honey
