Is it completely necessary to get an HDTV if i want a PS3?

Question

Right now a have a 45" sony trinitron (no HD features) and i know that the PS3 comes with blu-ray but does quality still look better than a DVD on a standard tv?

No the quality will not be better.  Because you will still be using component video.  HDMI transmits more info for a better pitcture.  Alot more then regular component video.  You need a HD TV to utilize blu-ray.  Trust me blu-ray looks ten times better in HD.  It's not completely necessary to get a HD TV.  But why would you buy a sports car and only drive it 5 MPH.

thats all a load of bollax from the other answerers,

i have an older 32" philips TV with no HD features and it works fine on that the only reason to get a HDTV is if you are wanting to get the best picture quality you can from your playstation 3..

oh yehh and to the guy above,  maybe you would go 5mph in a sports car if you were going over a speed hump?

the only way it will be an issue is if the ps3 does not have rca connectors. those are the red, white and yellow connectors. of course the quality will be diminished but unless you play it on an hdtv first you probably won't notice much difference.

You do not need a High Def TV. If you want maximum picture quality then yeah, you should look into purchasing one. The PS3 has settings to output in all formats, 480i  (which is what we have all grown up with), 720p, 1080i (which is very very close to 720p) and 1080p, the mother of all high def pictures. I say get the PS3 and play it on your current TV, when you can, get a High Def TV, then you will truly appreciate what the PS3 can do. Look at it this way, at least your TV is 45", some people don't even have that.
