Question:

Is it completely necessary to have wisdom teeth removed?

I'm 19, and my wisdom teeth are impacted...they've never given me a second of trouble, no pain or anything. Now my dentist wants me to get them removed, and it's gonna cost me personally about $1000 (with insurance and everything) to get all 4 removed.

I'm just not sure I see the point if there is no real problem going on with them. Will they eventually cause me problems, or is this a procedure that can wait a while?

  1. Hello, At this point in time having wisdom teeth extracted may not be a "must do" for you. The issue will be this. (1) Will they completely ruin the alignment of your other teeth when they do come in...or (2) Is there a risk that one of them might abscess while it's impacted?....If that should happen you can not believe the issue that can cause...not only would you be in significant pain you would be risking the abscess infection getting into your blood stream and that my friend can actually put your life at risk....So, look at all the possibilities and then decide what is the "smart" thing to do...Good luck and I wish you well.

  2. For some people, it is not necessary to get them removed. But you might need to if your dentist is recommending it.

Just because they're not causing you pain now, it doesn't mean they won't later. But I don't see why you would need to get them done right away unless they're a problem to your health.

I would ask him why you need to get them removed now (and if he says, "so we don't have to do it later" then you can tell him you'd rather do it later when you have the money for it)... if he honestly thinks that they're going to come down soon and be a problem, you should do what he says.

Your parents should help you with the cost, they've probably had the same surgery when they were younger. If you're on your own, all I suggest is save up, just in case.

    Good luck!

  3. It depends only a dentist can decide that so it is better to get it checked. Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 16 and 24.More remedies and information regarding your wisdom teeth at http://useinfo-dentalcare.blogspot.com/

  4. They can cause problems but honestly..I never got mine removed either and im still doing fine. I'm 25 now.

  5. Here's what I can tell you:

If the dentist says they need to come out, they probably do. They must be impacted, which means there's not enough room in your mouth for them to come in. Eventually, this will lead to pain and possibly disfiguration.

Not everyone has this problem. Some people can keep their wisdom teeth. When it comes down to it, though, who are you going to listen to: Y!A people or the professional who has seen the x-rays?

A lot of time a dentist will be willing to arrange a payment plan for your portion. Talk to him about it.

    Good luck! :D

  6. They may cause you a problem in a few years or they may not.  Mine were causing me a lot of pain and I had them all removed.  However, my mom's wisdom teeth have never erupted and she has never had them removed.  It is easier to heal from the surgery when you are younger than it is when you are older.

How are your teeth impacted?  Which direction are they?  Is it all 4 of them or just a couple?  You can tell your dentist that you can't afford to have them all removed and ask him which one is the most important to remove.

Also, if you aren't sure your dentist is being totally honest with you, you are entitled to get a second opinion.  Dental schools are a great way to get that.  The students don't make money off of you and they have teachers watching their every move.

In the end you need to look at all the information and make the best choice for you.  Good luck.
