  1. no it is not, but if you have one it has to be in working order

  2. A "Centre High-Mounted Stop Lamp" (or CHMSL) is a mandatory fitment on all new cars in order to meet European type-approval standards. All new cars must meet these standards in order to be registered in the UK.

The CHMSL does not have to be on the rear screen, but must be above the level of the outer brake lamps. On many cars, the rear screen is simply the most convenient location, but other possible locations include the trailing edge of the bootlid (just below the rear screen), a rear spoiler (either deck-mounted or at roof level) or the top of the tailgate above the rear screen, or even (as on the original Land Rover Freelander) on a spare wheel carrier.

Fitment to older cars, manufactured before they became mandatory, is not required.

  3. YES, it is a legal requirement for all new cars to have one. If there is one fitted, it is illegal to remove, even if it is an old car.

It is as much a legal requirement as any other type of light.

  4. yep

  5. No, although the newer cars have them as standard fittings.

My car hasn't got one, although I personally prefer them for the extra safety, if I have a dope of a driver behind me or if one of my brake lights goes faulty as I'm driving.

  6. nope, only those built into the side lights.

  7. Yes and No, it depends on the year the vehicle was manufactured.

  8. Nope. The idea is to help you see ahead - through the car in front if you see what I mean - to forewarn you.

  9. Only on new vehicles, but they should be banned, or at least automatically switched off when stopped. Apart from rear fog lights, they are one of the most annoying things when sat behind some r****d with their foot on the brake pedal, instead of applying the hand brake, dazzling everybody behind them.

  10. No it is'nt

  11. no

  12. No you dont need one..
