Is it considered Vegitarian if you eat seafood?

Because it was (to say it grossly) alive at one point. But on the other hand it isn't the kind of (eeewwww) "meat" that you would think about

Is it?

  1. This would mean the person is a pescetarian.  Someone who eats seafood but not meat from land animals.

The word pescetarian derives from the latin word for fish 'piscis' and is similar to the Spanish word for fish 'pescado' and the Italian 'pesce'.

  2. Only if the seafood is seaweed.

    Real vegetarians don't eat animals.

If the Catholic Church says fish is not meat, I don't see what that has to do with billions of vegetarians who are not Catholics.

If cook books say fish is not meat, that doesn't make any difference either. Fish are animals and I don't look in a cook book for my biology lesson.

I do agree with exfst to a certain extent. I'm actually getting tired of calling myself "vegetarian" because the word seems to be losing it's original meaning. I'm more likely to just say "I don't eat animals" unless I am around people from India or Hare Krishna members because they will know what I mean.

I remember arguing with a Catholic girl in grade school back in the 1960s--"Fish is meat!" "It is not!" It is so!" 40 years later the same silly argument is still going on.

Most of the people I meet who say they are vegetarian actually eat fish, chicken, or whatever. I even met one guy who said he was vegetarian, although he had a farm with lambs he slaughtered and ate.

    Can't we have new word?

  3. Yes I would say that you are. If you don't eat any kind of meat or poultry or take anything from anything that was alive at one point then you are vegan.

  4. Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all animal, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products.[1][2][3] The reasons for choosing vegetarianism may be related to morality, religion, culture, ethics, aesthetics, environment, society, economy, politics, taste, or health.

( SO NO YOU ARE NOT A VEGETARIAN AS SUCH IF YOU EAT SEAFOOD)

  5. First of all, I eat meat, and I don't say "ew" about vegetarians.  If I respect the vegetarian lifestyle, please give me the same respect.

Anyway, if the only animal product you eat is fish/shellfish (and maybe milk and eggs), you're referred to as a pescetarian (or pescatarian).

  6. Vegetarians don't eat seafood, and if meat grosses you out stop eating it.

  7. Vegetarians don't eat animals at all.

  8. No

  9. some people are considered "vegetarians" even though they still eat fish and no other animal flesh. they don't consider it meat. but an animal is an animal. you're right, it was alive at one point. i'm pretty much against consuming any animal flesh, sea creatures and land creatures. period.

  10. Only if you believe the pope when he says fish is not meat.

  11. Well, considering the definition of vegetarianism, you would not qualify as a true vegetarian.  Simply put, vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes ALL animal, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products.

There are several variants of the vegetarian diet, some of which also exclude eggs and/or some products produced from animal labor such as dairy products and honey. Veganism, for example, excludes all animal products from diet. By some strict definitions, animal products are not used for attire either, whether or not the production of clothing or items has directly involved the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool, silk, down feathers, etc.). A generic term for both vegetarianism and veganism, as well as for similar diets, is "plant-based diets".

  12. fish is eeewwwww meat

  13. Nope, by definition, a vegetarian is someone who does not eat fish, flesh, or fowl. As I explained it to my 5-year-old goddaughter, vegetarians don't eat anything that ever had a face.

  14. In Japan, they eat a lot of sea food while calling themselves (many are zen buddhists) vegetarian. There was a survey a while back (the one that says smart people are likely to be vegetarian) that found out that a full one third of those surveyed called themselves vegetarian but ate fish/seafood and chicken in a regular basis.

Here on YA, you will be reported for even suggesrtiing that fish/seafood is vegetarian. For some, it is more important to have the label.

By definitioin, it would not be part of a vegetarian diet as fish is still meat even if it does not come from mammals or other land based animals

  15. Yes vegatarien (some) does eat fish dont now why. but i dont cause i consider it meat and cause it still come from animals/ a animal.

  16. No, vegetarians do not eat dead animals.  Plain and simple.  it doesn't matter what ecosystem that animal lived in, if it's a member of the animal kingdom, vegetarians don't kill it for food.  Meat is simply the flesh of a dead animal; fish is meat.

These are the people who made up the word vegetarian: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/definitions.h...  It's their word and nobody else gets to alter the definition on a whim.

  17. Well, in the dietitians/nutritionists' point of view, a person who does not eat red meat (but who eats poultry and/or fish) is considered semi-vegetarian.

(And just for a little further explanation:

    Vegetarian or lacto-ovo-vegetarian - does not eat meat but eats dairy and eggs;

Ovo-vegetarian - eats eggs, but no meat or dairy at all

Vegan - does not eat meat, dairy or eggs at all.)

Also, important to note is that there are many different reasons why a person chooses to be a vegetarian. So you can't label someone who eats seafood as not being semi-vegetarian just because the person does not want to slaughter animals.

There are religious/spiritual reasons, there are the reasons based on the love and "respect" for animals, others may be trying to protect their health because some bovines and poultry receive growth hormones that may cause disease if consumed for a long time.

So, nobody can turn to you and say, "you're not a vegetarian at all" because you eat seafood. As I mentioned above, the experts in the field of nutrition call someone who eats seafood or poultry a semi-vegetarian. You can research that in scholarly books if you want to, and I actually encourage you to do so.

Not underestimating many people's answers here, you should  not believe everything that people tell you just because they *think* that is the way it is. If we applied knowledge the way we *think* it is in any area of study, then we have a big problem, because planes cannot fly, cell phones cannot work properly, it will be ok to put aluminum in the microwave etc. So, research properly, or listen to people who are in that field of study.

  18. i believe that seafood is meat and does count even if its served with veggies.

  19. Yes, it's considered vegetarian to eat seafood, It's just not considered vegan
