I haven't noticed people saying "Can you hear me now?"  If they do, they aren't being funny.  The joke is now quite stale.

It's not cool, but it is kind of funny.  I'll say it sometimes without even thinking about it, like when I have a bad connection or whatever.  My son thinks it's pretty funny in a dorky 16 yr old kind of way.

I don't see what's cool about it.

It's actually kind of annoying when you are not able to hear the person you're trying to speak to.
