  1. No. Tides in the ocean are caused primarily by the gravitational effects of the Moon; the Sun's gravity also has an effect. Waves, however, are usually just caused by wind, although there are a few waves (often the largest ones, known as tsunamis) that can be caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, underwater landslides and, potentially, meteor impacts, and some waves are also caused by boats, floatplanes and so on.

  2. I can understand how people are confused.

Waves are indeed caused by the wind.

Its the tide itself that is caused the the gravitational pull of the moon.

Its a shame i don't have a picture to illustrate this, but you can (for England this is) actually draw around the country the movement of the tide, its like looking at the hand on a clock go around and around.

  3. Winds cause the waves not the moons gravitation. Winds are created by the gravitation of the Earth as the Earth rotates. Of course things higher up will experience less gravity so therefore there is friction and hence winds are form. Waves are formed from the winds.

  4. Sea waves are caused by wind indeed, but wind is not caused by gravitation.  Wind is caused by the fluid dynamic response of the atmosphere to solar heating.

  5. The waves that you see are caused by the wind mostly,

    (maybe some boat wakes).

You might call the tides, (which are caused by the sun and moon),

very long period waves, but that's not really your question is it?

  6.   Sea waves are caused by weather  the moon's gravity affects the tides..

  7. No.  Waves are due to wind.  The size of the waves depends on the strength of the wind and the length  of the area on which the wind can operate.  There is a term for this is fetch.  Size also depends on the duration of the wind.  So the largest waves will be caused by high winds, traveling over long distances, for a long period of time.

  8. There is a small influence from the moon.  Most is from the wind.

  9. All the seas movements are via the moon and the sun. This includes waves and esp. tides. Moon has the most control.

  10. Wind is the answer.  Fliers use to use wave height to measure wind speed.
