Our secretary responds that way when the phone is for her, and I think it sounds weird. I would say "this is Mike".

  1. Weird but correct. It is she answering the phone.

  2. yes

  3. yea,   i think they say it like that to sound more professional,   it probably is the correct grammar too.

  4. It is correct to respond in this fashion if the caller is specifically asking for the person who is specifically responding.  Put another way, if the caller is saying "May I speak with Kathy" and Kathy is the one answering the phone, then Kathy would naturally respond:  "This is she."

  5. It is correct. However, it does sound rather pretentious and aloof. I much prefer "this is Mike" - it's so much more personal.

  6. Although grammatically correct it's rather pompous and not normal speech in today's more casual office environment.

"This is Mike, can I help you?" sounds better.
