Question:

Is it cost effective to build a car that does not just run off gasoline?

My plan is to take the entire body (hood, roof, trunk, everything on the outside) off the car and just create a entirely new body that will fit the frame and chassis of the car I am working with. While I am doing that I think it would be a good time to experiment with alternate fuel sources. If I could make the car electrical, hybrid, or run of a alternate fuel source then that would be all well worth it? Or would it?

  1. it would be worth it even if it will be expensive

  2. I took a older Mercedes and converted it to run $1.00 a gallon fuel.Even new VWs will run it.

  3. You have an ambitious project on your hands. I have been making prototype vehicles for the auto and movie industries for 30 years so I am familiar with the process.

Adding alternate energy to the project adds to the overall complexity of the project. However, I am also looking into making an alternate energy vehicle.

A pure electric is very appealing and simple to do. All of the components are readily available. Myself, I am thinking of an electric vehicle with a fuel driven generator to add to the range. A gasoline or diesel generator running at a steady but optimum rate would be very efficient, possibly getting as much as 100 MPG. Trains use this same method and can move cargo very efficiently.
