Question:

Is it culturally insensitive of me to complain about the customer service in Cantonese & Yum Cha restaurants?

By general standards in Australia the service in some cantonese and yum cha restaurants is terrible..... but I'm told that it's a "cultural" thing. For example, even if I book a table for 5 people at a certain time, we might still be asked to wait for ages in a queue after arriving at the restaurant (and they don't tell us in advance). Or the waiters give you wrong information about the ingredients of a particular dish (when you enquire because of an allergy). Or the waitresses don't speak any english and it takes a lot of time and effort to communicate your order.

I keep getting told it's "cultural"...... but then how can standards be improved if that's always the excuse?

  1. h**l, it's only culture if it's done at every restaurant of that type. I highly doubt that's the case; it's just horrible service. There's nothing wrong with people working who do not speak English when it's needed, but it's a horrible idea to put them in a position where it's required
