Is it customary to give money to new reverts?

I said my shahadah today (finally, Alhamdulillah)!! and the masjid took up a collection for me (to help me buy islamic clothing and such and to help me become a good Muslimah in general). I havent counted all the money yet, but there must be $400. Is this normal, or is that a practice of that particular mosque?

  12. It's not customary but it's really nice of them to welcome you like that! I think all Masajid should do something like that.
