Is it each generation's rite of passage to have to re-debate and re-de-bunk the myth of "overpopulation?"

Question

Why does Malthsianism have to be re-debated and re-de-bunked so frequently, and is it a good thing that we go through the exercise, despite the apparent waste of resources and time?

I believe overpopulation refers to the ever increasing number of humans on this earth who produce offspring without any thought  as to how to feed, clothe and educate them.  We're not running out of space or approaching earths weight limit.
