  1. It can matter they might not accept you because you are in a potently dangerous environment, but it is easier to get into the police force with a history in the military.

  2. If it is anything but an Honorable discharge I do believe you would have to request it to be upgraded to an honorable. This can be a long and grueling ordeal. Best to ask a recruiter and let them see your DD 214 and they can tell you by looking at your codes that are under your discharge.

  3. If you got an OTH you're SOL

  4. The first  question is whether it is easier to become an Officer if you were prior enlisted.   The answer is twofold:  There is no official advantage in the selection of officers for being prior enlisted.  So no one will give you any free pass because you were enlisted.  However, if you make it to Officer Candidate School, being prior enlisted is a great advantage.  You already know so much that the new officers have to learn - like close order drill for instance.  Knowing how to get ready for an inspection is a great help - you just don't sweat it like the others do.

The second question is whether it matters how you were discharged.  Yes it matters.  The classification of your discharge will keep you from being accepted...unless:  a couple factors come into play:  How long ago?  What were the circumstances?  If they can be explained you can get a waiver and clear that obstacle.

Do you have a college degree?  That is usually the biggest sticking point for men or women who want to move up.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you
