Hello,

I was looking at applying to get my PTA but found out that the classes would not tranfer to a PT degree. I already have my bachelors in psychology but only have 2.5 in my overall undergrad work. I have already missed the deadline for enrollment into the PTA program but was going to take the prerequisites to get into the program. However, my overall goal is to get the PT degree. I want to know if I am waisting my time by going for the PTA degree and should I just wait unitl next fall to just try and get into a PT progam.

Thank you for your time.

  1. It is DEFINITELY worth it!  I work for a recruiting company that hires PTs and PTAs.  First of all you'll have some course work and interns done and you can find a good job as a PTA with very good pay while waiting to get your PT degree.

  2. think about it

  3. Bookshop is right, there is no compensation giving to PTAs who wish to become PTs.  They must start all over like everyone else. If you plan to become a PTA prior to becoming a PT, this could be about a 9 year journey.

Even though you already have your BS, go back and just start taking your prerequisites for PT school and boost that GPA.  Don't enroll in a PTA program if your hope is really to become a PT.

  4. Don't waste your time with the PTA program.  Look into the PT program you want to enter and make certain you have satisfied their admission requirements.  If you haven't had courses in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology you're going to need to get back in school this year to get these requirements.

PTA and PT are two separate professions with separate scopes of practice and bodies of knowledge.  Depending on where you live, a PTA may need a 2-year associate degree, or they may only need on-the-job training.  A PT needs a masters degree.  There's a world of difference between them.

So if you want the masters degree, go for it and don't bother with the PTA courses that aren't going to help you anyway.
