I'm off to work in NZ in a few weeks and while I'm searching for a more permanent job I'm going to need some income. How easy will it be to find some temporary work? I was thinking about just office temping work to begin with.. are there jobs available and do they pay ok? Or if not, can you suggest anything else.. (preferably not bar-work, but I guess if I have to I will)

Oh, also, I want to try an get my own apartment after a while, but at first I was going to try and just rent a room in a shared house, is this easy to do?

I'm only coming to NZ to work for a year, but I'm really looking forward to it! Thanks in advance for your advice..

  1. Try these links . . . .

  2. Yes, you should be able to find temporary  work.

But firstly, you must get the permission of the Labour Department. This department keeps changing its name. It may be either 'Work and Income' or 'Ministry of Social Development'. Some days I wonder if even the employees can keep up with all the "rebranding".

The Department may also be able to place you in a position they've been notified of, that is not known to others.

Check them out in the blue pages at the front of the phone book. They will have a freephone number so you can contact them from anywhere in the country for no charge.

  3. check out

    and http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-jobs/i...

for job listings and also regarding finding a place to live/stay check out

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Flatmates/Welli...

for current "flatmates wanted" advertisements in the the wellington region

    and http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Property...

for current flats/houses/apartments for rent in the Wellington region

you shouldn't have a problem finding a job, whether it will pay well is another question - minimum wage is $12 per hour, jobs that aren't permanent may pay less.

Good luck, hope the links are of some use to you
