  1. HOW is easy. WHY is harder.

Getting turtles to mate is easy enough. The hard thing is providing the right habitat for nesting. Most home keepers cannot offer the sort of nesting habitat the turtles want.

Now, you can overcome this- a tub like http://www.waterlandtubs.com or an outdoor pond with a shore, etc. will work.

The thing is that we really should not breed animals of any kind without asking a few questions.

Why are we doing it? There are a lot of good reasons- reducing wild-caught pets, making good pets more affordable, etc. 'Just because' really is not a good reason.

Do you understand, and are you ready for all phases of the process? In turtles, this means having nesting sites ready, knowing how to move eggs safely, having a working incubator ready, and knowing how to care for the baby turtles.

What is your plan for the babies? You probably don't really want to raise 15-30 babies. Thinking about selling them? Do you have a customer or at least a gentleman's agreement? Thinking about releasing them? Think again- that is illegal in most of the US and only should be done by experienced rehabbers.

Sorry if this sounds negative. We need more happy, healthy turtles, and more breeders of them- but an awful lot of ANY animal breeders are not doing such a good job.

  2. I would wait untill the turtles are 5 years old. Then put them together and wait, hide behind someting, if the turtles see you they will feel insecure, there should be some sort of mating ritutal ( claws viberating, swimming in circles) and they the will mate or fight.  I will sound like you have pet chickens. hehehehhe CLICK CLICK

  3. http://www.redearslider.com/  Check out this site for more info..

At around 5 inches Male RES will start the mating dance.

They will swim around the female and he will caress her face and shell with his long front nails. If she accepts The male will mount her, if not a fight might break out. Mating time is in the spring. You should move the Female to a sepertate tank.
