Going staying my my partners parents in new Territories but it is my first time in HK and we want to get out and visit the main tourist attractions. Is it easy to get there and back in an evening from this village/town?

  1. Catch a mini bus to Choi Hung MTR and then hop on the train to Central...alternatively there are mini busses that run from Sai Kung to Mongkok and even as far as Causeway Bay, not sure of the frequency and time, you can ask when you get to Sai Kung.

  2. HK can be very overwhelming and you're living a little out of the way. To get the most out of your day you really need to be getting up early each day. You should be able to squeeze in a day. The best advice I could give you is really to learn the KCR (railway) and MCR (underground) inside out. They're really really regular and will be really useful to you. Buy a couple of guides too, good guides will tell you which train stations to get on, when to get off and if you need to take any connecting buses. There should be guides in the airport, grab one before you leave and you should be grand :).

But be careful too! The underground and railway closes quite early (between 11pm and 1am depending on which day) so be sure to ask an attendant so you're not stranded at night! Worst comes worst, if you miss the last train you can almost always hail a cab, there's loads of them everywhere. But there's TWO colours of taxis, red and green. I can't remember now so you might need to ask but only ONE of them goes out and into Sun Gai (New Territories?).

Good luck and have fun at HK, you're so lucky!

  3. The most direct way beside taking taxi is:

take bus route 299 at 'Sai Sha Road' to 'Sha Tin Railway Station'. Take the train there to 'Kowloon Tong' then change MTR for Central. Please note that route 299 only runs till 23:00. I think it takes you about 1.5 hours each way (including waiting and transit time) and it will be quite a rush for an evening out. There is a buddist temple in Sha Tin which is not far from the train station. I suggest you spend half day there before heading to Central if you have the time.

  4. It is fairly easy getting from the main tourist attractions to the New Territories.  The KCR and MTR are now merged and operated soley by the MTR which goes all over HK island, Kowloon and the New Territories.  Here is their website which will give you detailed information on the routes, fares, maps etc... http://www.mtr.com.hk
