I am so - so at home maintenance, fancy having a go at it myself but it seems too small a job to get quotes on...any ideas?

We have a plan with reactfast home assist but this sort of thing is not covered :(

  1. i would not hesitate DIY than i am a tight fist ed b*****d!

  2. Really depends on what type of shower you're going to go for.  I'm assuming you're talking either fiberglass or plastic surround with tray.  If you get a new shower that has the same dimensions for where the drain goes, then heck yes...DIY.  If you're talking about having to replumb the drain and such, you may want to consider the time it will take and a DIYer.  If your plumbing is set in concrete, it may become involved.  If you have a crawl space, then take a look under there and see how easy it will be to replumb if necessary.  The mixing valve and shower head are pretty easy.  usually just have to drill out hole in the new surround for right spots, unless you changing that stuff out too.

It can be really easy, but it can also become involved depending on your house.

  3. Well, I am not an avid DIY fella by a long chalk but I managed it OK.  I found it to be one of those jobs that turn out not to be as difficult as you had imagined. To be honest I did it as I could not afford a professional at the time.

  4. It's a standard product, and you have the time and patience, and tool, do it.

It may sound obvious, but the first thing you do is: SHUT OFF THE MAIN, MAKE SURE THE WATER SUPPLY IS OFF. NOT IN THE SHOWER BUT IN THE HOUSE.

  5. I'm a pen-pusher of note and my wife laughs when I even attempt to do DIY, but I managed a full shower on my own with not one leak, so I'd say it can be done...

Approach it logically with the end in mind i.e. think of all the problems that you may be left with and negate those

  6. i gave you a star-lol-i got same problem-scratching head wondering if i can tackle same job myself-i say go for it if have another bathroom incase you get in over your head-job not too small lots of retired plumbers still enjoy doing odd jobs like that-good luck
