Is it easy to switch grips during play?

Is it possible to occasionally switch grips, for example from full western to semi western or full eastern grips, to vary my shots during play?

If I change tactics? For example I decided to execute a flatter shot instead of topspin shot? Is it technically easy to switch from western to semi western grip?

If I want to serve and volley, Can I technically change grips from western to continental grip?

  1. yes you can it will just take some work and practice.

  2. Yes, it is easy after some practice. Once you do it for a while, you don't even notice you are doing it.

  3. It becomes automatic when you've been playing the game for awhile. You don't even notice it anymore. It basically becomes an instinct. Just keep practicing and it should come to you naturally in time.

  4. Not only is it possible but recommended.  Many people use different grips on their forehand and backhand side.  In addition, if your volley grip and forehand grip are the same, either you are hitting some flat forehands, or your volleys are bad.  Switch grips and play better, it's just science :-)

  5. Yeah, I change grips all the time.  After I serve, and when I hit a backhand.  After I hit a continental serve I switch to a western grip, and if I am going to hit a backhand I switch from western to eastern grip.  And when I want to return a high topspin lob I sometimes change my grip from western to extreme western.

  6. If you are having trouble changing grips during play, it might be a good idea to practise the grip change from the baseline, as the distance the ball travels would buy you some time to change grip.

While volleying, the best grip to use would be the semi continental or eastern forehand/backhand. However, this takes practice as the ball will be coming at you much faster. A western grip is inadvisable for volleying due to insufficient reaction time and poor volleying angles.

A good strategy to use would be to use your off-hand (your left hand, if you are a right handed) to turn the racquet. It's very difficult to change grip without it.

  7. Yes its very easy, its just comes with practice. After a while you will find that you just do it naturally with thinking or even noticing. When you manage to get a grip of it it really can improve your shots and more importantly win more games.

So keep working away and in no time you should see improvements in your game.
