People may tell foreigners that they are Asian-American or African-American, or maybe that their parents or grandparents were from China (or whatever country).  Many people whose relatives have recently immigrated to the United States feel ties to both their parents or grandparents' country, and to the United States.

In this country, most people would say they are "American," but since most of our ancestors came from other countries, there is a tendency to put people in groups according to their nationality.

In Ann Curry's case, I think she is half Japanese.  That would explain her reluctance to answer the questions about racial make up directly.  Most of us know of the atrocities made on the Chinese by the Japanese in WWII.

I don't know who Ann Curry is and I think each person acts differently and for their own reasons.  I was going to say I think it's rude they don't shake her hand if they shake everyone else's..then I started wondering if it's a cultural thing...glad a couple people here answered your question...rest of us just out for two points I guess...

I always wonder how foreigners view Americans though. We can be pretty stupid and arrogant at the same time.
