  1. Suburbs cheaper  Bus passes are tax deductable   Medicare  about  $ 100.00  Hospital free  Drugs on a deductable based on income

  2. I would double check that the $4000 is after deductions.  Normally, employers do not quote net salary; they give you gross salary before deductions.

Downtown is really expensive to rent and you will not get a single family house - only an apartment which you can still find for about 850 and up for a 1 bedroom.  Working downtown, you are best to rent an apartment in the East Vancouver area - there are many nice locations off Wall Street and Powell and Nanaimo area- rent for a 2 bedroom can be found for $1000 and up.  You can then bus it into your job.  There are many parks in this area to take a child.

  3. Yes, it's enough. It's not fabulous but you could be comfortable if you're careful. I would recommend, though, that you find a place to live outside of downtown, such as Burnaby, and you may have to settle for a suite in a house or a townhouse. Choose a place close to transit so you don't have to drive.

  4. I agree with Shannlen; double check the salary because $4K gross = about $3200 net.  Living in downtown's Yaletown area is ok for a while, but if you're planning on longterm, better to get somewhere further out, but close to a Skytrain station.  The new Richmond-downtown line should almost be finished, definitely by 2010, so you could live out there.  Just remember that it's below sea level so in an earthquake, you might not see your home for a while.  Many areas of Vancouver are safe to live in, but oddly enough, Westside Van. with more million dollar places than anywhere, is high in crime.  Stick to cheaper but safer areas and have a great time!

  5. I was in Vancouver about a month back and I have to say that this place is really expensive. I was thinking of moving there so I checked the rental properties in downtown and other areas. It is very hard to find a good place there and if you do then be prepared to pay a fortune for it.
