Without using flares, AAMs etc.

  1. actually using AAM would be of no use, because the response time would efectively deny the pilot to lock the missile onto the incoming threat.

the SAM missiles MIGHT be outmaneuvered, depending on their target aquisition, maneuverability, range of fire and other features that infuence the kill probability.

Please do not think of outmaneuvering as an dogfight scene - the missiles have  much higher maximum Gs allowed and thus smaller maneuvering diameters /despite their higher travel velocities/ than human piloted planes. the outmaneuvering here merely means flying out of the line of sight of the missile.

Under some circumstances you could actually even fly away from the missile - the missile has limitied fuel only and after using it the missile travels purely ballistic-wise with control inputs of the control surfaces - Phoenix be one of the examples, though it is not a SAM. then the more maneuvering is requpired, the more speed is spent by the missile, until it could eventually terminate itself. However this is theoretical and no sentient AD crew would fire against the target at the far edge of their fire envelope

The older system the more likely it is penetrated or evaded.

Generally the omptimal air defense includes surveilance systems and various firing systems. This complex acquires the targets and shares information on targets, and even is capable of issuing the individual targets to certain TELARs to destroy them.

individually deployed system of any range can by over- or under flown, or destroyed. if they mix various ranges, they mix their better surveillance and push the minimum bypass levels to zero height above ground /virtually/

Of course developed militaries of today widely use the electronic jamming techniques to deny the enemy from gaining and distributing the target data - which is easier to achieve than outmaneuvering the incoming missile.

  2. Yes.  SAMs are not very maneuverable.

  3. YES! Modern fighter have electronic countermeasures, chaff and flares. Plus some fighters can actually out maneuver a rocket.

  4. Heat seeking missiles can be evaded (subject to the pilot spotting the missile when fired) to a certain extent by:-

    1) Pointing your aircraft directly into the sun and reducing power..The chances are that the missile will go towards the hotter area of the sun.

    2) If close to the ground, hit the deck. The ground clutter will interfere with the missile's homing system.

    3) Vertical dive towards the ground with throttle idle and speed brakes out. This will confuse the missile's guidance system and hopefully will make it miss the aircraft.

  5. Yes it is.

This wouldn't really happen, since we do have excellent EWS for defense.

Actually, modern EWS systems can tell what the threat is, so the pilot can use the appropriate countermeasures to assist in evading.

A fighter would be better off if it got low and slowed down. A fighter doing 300-400mph can make a tighter turn than a telephone sized missile doing mach 3 or 4, no matter how many g's it can sustain.
