Question:

Is it even possible to get a good car for under $3000?

When I say "good car", I mean a used economy car with less than 100K miles on it, good fuel economy (at least 30mpg highway), no older than 12 years and in relatively good condition.

If not, can someone tell me the expected price for a car that meets my requirements?

  1. First of all you can forget the 30 mpg.  Rarely do cars reach those numbers.  Lower your expectations to 25mpg.

Less than 100K and less than 12 years old, you can probably get at least one of these, but probably not both.

That's not to say you can't find a good car for $3000 but you have to drop your criteria and just look for a good car and stop worrying about miles and age. Just look for a good car that has been well cared or and not abused.

In your price range there are cars out there, you just have to know what to look for.  And good running car that is in decent shape should work out fine for you.

  2. Yes if you do your homework and take the proper steps checking the car out.  You also have to ask yourself what you need the car to do.  Older cars for money like that are usually good for local driving and the occasional long trip.

  3. Possible - Yes

Likely - Not really  (I got a steal though only 67,000 miles on a sunfire for 2000)

    Price - 4-5 K

  4. take a look at the late 90's early 2ks nissan altimas.

or check out edmunds.com for other reviews.

    Good luck!

  5. Sure you can.

But, ditch the 100K mile goal as this is meaningless now.  I know, because that's the number I had in mind when I bought my first vehicle on my own.

This is not the 60s or 70s, vehicles last much longer now.

  6. yes it is,

    try craigslist.com.
