I am a small business junkie, operating several small ventures successfully.I am always looking to create a good or service of extreme value, where the need is practically screaming out to the world. It's my passion! I always encourage my friends to do the same. Anyway, I have a brilliant friend who came up with this fantastic idea for a product which I am fully convinced will be extremely profitable. The problem is he came up with it 2 years ago and still won't act on it! it pisses me off. I threaten him playfully that he has 6 months to do something or I will, yet he is still unmotivated. I love his idea and have the capital and drive to go for it! Ethically, I know it's questionable to act on a friend's business idea and haven't even considered it,even if he probably won't pursue it, which really sucks! What gives?? I think its unfair and stupid. By the way, we are talking serious $$$$. If he doesn't want $$$$, why can't I pursue his idea???

  1. Legally, as long as trade secrets, trademarks, or patents are not involved, there is nothing stopping you. Morally, I would suggest approaching the friend first and offering to create a partnership, rather than simply starting on your own. Your friend likely has no idea where to begin.

  2. It will cost you a friendship, but ideas alone are not protected by patent, trademark or copy-write.  If you want to act on it AND not lose the friend, cut him in on it for a reasonable share of the company.
