Is it ever time to trade your "Franchise" player?

Brett Favre just got traded. I understand that the Packers had to do what they had to do, but Brett is the greatest passer of all time. I can only remember one time when trading the franchise player resulted in a Super Bowl, Hershel Walker to the Vikings.
