Is it expedited shipping if another continent is thrown in?

Ordered a book from Amazon. I live near Tokyo, Japan. I figured it would take 10 days max since there are direct flights to Tokyo from so many US cities but paid the extra expedited fee because of the 6-12 day time frame listed.. Amazon (in answer to my email) sent me an email saying that I should recieve it on a date that is 18 days later-and it is going through Deutche (German) post! Does anyone know how their system works and how it would conform to the term "expedited?"
