  1. I would say not at all..considering you are leisurely fishing as yu become more adept at it and further interested you will want better gear and more gear.

Id reccommend starting with a little rod and reel combo and a box of nightcrawlers and maybe a small net. A basket and knife you want to clean the fish.

For some good priced fishing gear check out my website at

We run on the amazon network a trusted name

  2. Not really... Now if one were ta' compare leisure fishin' with the obsession type ~ the latter can get quite expen$ive, but of course that's dependin' on just how obsessed one gets ;)...

  3. It really depends on what you use, what fish you target, and what you call expensive...lol.

For a cheap, but good starter rod and reel, you can get a spincast Zebco 33. They are decent and you can get the combo for like $20. You'll also need some weights (and possibly bobbers if you will be using those), some hooks, a small tackle box, some needle nose pliers, a bucket or cooler and a filet knife if you are not practicing catch and release, some gloves, and a small first aid kit.

For bait, you can either buy or catch live ones, or you can buy some jigs and lures. For cheap, starter, casual fishing, I would suggest starting with live, you can always move up into lures over time. Unless you are targeting bass, then you'll likely want lures and maybe some attractant.

It can be a reasonable cost for starting to fish, but if you do like my husband and I did and go all out, it can get costly pretty quick. If you are on a tight budget, I suggest start with some basics and slowly accumulate your inventory over time. You can get a lot of you stuff at Walmart too, which will cut down on costs.

Here are some sites I found helpful when I first got started:

I still use these on a pretty regular basis too. I hope this helps. Fishing can become an expensive hobby if you get carried away, but it's a WONDERFUL hobby, and is definitely worth it. Good luck! Let us know if you have any other questions about it and we'll help as much as we can.

Additional: Oh, almost forgot, don't forget about these sites, they have good fishing supplies too. Not as cheap as Walmart, but a bigger selection.

  4. It really depends on what kind of gear you want to buy, buying only the worst gear possible makes it quite cheap, if you want something that will last a little more, you can start fishing with a combo from wal-mart easily and at a OK price.

  5. You can literally spend as much or as little as you want.  A Zebco 33 classic combo costs about $25 and has probably caught more fish than any other rod/reel out there, but a $600 Shimano Calcutta will let you do things you couldn't do with the Zebco.

The point is to have fun, and fishing can be good, cheap fun.  Enjoy!

  6. Expensive as being relative to what?

it is cheap to find out all you can about fishing from the library. Especially about what all the differnet rods and reels do and can't do I am thinking though a person today can rig three difeferent rods and reels for three different species for under $250.00. The terminal tackle a decent assortment of baits, cranks, jigs, spinners, and plastics $300.00 your liscense $35.00 lake or landing charges, bait costs and the time involved learning what and what not to do.    priceless

  7. You need to find out what type of fishing you want to do. Sea / Coarse /Game.  All require different tackle. Maybe you can find a friend who does one sort and spend a day with them to see if that floats your boat.  Once you have tried all sorts then dive into a tackle shop and fill your boots,  Then it becomes expensive if you go for the top gear available, but if it is what you want then money well spent.

  8. Only for the fish.

  9. I see you have plenty of answers telling you it doesn't have to be expensive, so I thought I'd just pass on another link.  Check out www.getreeled.com.  It's a great new social networking site devoted to fishing.

  10. Fishing can be as inexpensive or expensive as you are willing to go.  You can get a stick and some fishing line and a hook and fish or you can buy very expensive equipment and fish.  Just go to Wal-mart and get a rod and reel that you can afford, then get some hooks, some lead weights (sinkers), and some bobbers.  You will need some bait, either worms, or for catfish liver.  This is about as inexpensive as you can go.  As you become more experienced the fishing will get more expensive as you get specialized tackle for specific fish.  You should get a guide or someone you trust who knows how to fish to guide you through what to buy for the fishing you intend to do.  Fishing is supposed to be fun and relaxing so remember to have fun, half of the fun of fishing is finding out what works and what does not.  Good luck!
