Is it expensive to study abroad?

If I started off studying here in the U.S. and then went to Europe or Japan for a semester, how much money does it generally cost? Can you get a part time job there? And if you're paying for college yourself (no help from parents) is it actually possible to do?

  1. Hey,

If you wish to study a semester overseas, it is cheaper than studying for a whole year.  It is however still pretty pricey. The cost of tuition varies from the differing universities/colleges around the world. In Europe, since the Euro is worth slightly more than the US Dollar, the tuition is higher for Americans and accommodation only adds fuel to the fire, as it is very expensive. In the UK, the Pound is worth double the US Dollar, so it's even more burdening when speaking of finances. Japan is an expensive country to study/live in, i am not too sure of the monetary figures though.

If you choose to study overseas, you must apply for a visa and will be able to work part time, many international students do this to have pocket money for the week. Without parents, you really must rely on FAFSA, Student Loans, whether private or federal, and your own personal income. Unless you have a lot of money stashed away, you really will not be able to pay for it yourself. Remember, you need money for tuition, accommodation, and living expenses, i.e. food, going out etc. Student Loans cover mostly all these costs, but obviously you have to pay them off once your done with your studies.

Although expensive, it's a great experience!! Hope this Helps!! Take Care!!
