The basics: a bedroom, 250 sq feet, vaulted ceiling. The room (CA Bay Area) is not particularly hot most of the time, but heat waves are becoming more frequent and more intense, and we're often now going to bed in a room that is 90 degrees.

We would like to air condition this bedroom. We believe a small 110V unit, 10,000 BTUs or so would suffice to lower the temp by 10 degrees if it were on a few hours before bedtime.

Will I need to have a new custom frame and window made to replace the sliding window? With only 2.9 inches behind the plantation shutter, will that be enough to be able to close the shutter? We're in a town house, so outside aesthetics are important.

Many thanks in advance for your kind advice.

  1. I can't see how it can be done efficiently with the existing window.  Have you thought about installing it in the wall?  Cutting a hole in the wall at about 6 ft.

  2. If you use a split air conditioning unit all you need is a 3 inch  diameter hole, for the pipe then you can put the air vent anywhere you like in the room and the compressor outside hanging on the wall.

  3. yes, but it would need to be proped up with some wood or if your like me a ton of duct tape. And you could fill the empty space iwth a sheet of plastic or a plank of would if you dont want to get a cutom frame.
