Is it fine to start an essay with a poem?

i mean the poem is my self written ..just 4 lines...i hope its not wrong or sumthing of tht sort...the essay is on female foeticide..so i strted wid emotional kindda lines

Yes indeed! It's a great way to get the readers' attention...just so long as the opening poem has something to do with the body of your essay!

Touching as it is, you're only supposed to use quotation. You can write lines in a nice poetic way to an extent but treating the teacher/whoever to a wonderful poem is probably not best done in an essay. Objective not subjective.

well if u start with a proverb and in the between with ur poem then ur essay will achieve a good position bcoz.. an essay which starts with a proverb and a poem in between is quite impressive one.

i think no, an essay is a formal kind of writing. I don't encourage u especially that the poem is yours, so it is nothing known or so famous/
