  1. I've heard of Americans doing this. I think it's funny. I'm glad I'm Canadian and can honestly and proudly wear my flag when I travel!

  2. It is not unethical for whatever reason they choose to do it, but if it makes them feel safe then why not.

  3. Morality is Virtue motivated by Duty.

Ethics is Virtue motivated by Love.

I think you may be thinking about "immoral" rather than "unethical".

Loyalty and Patriotism are functions of Duty, therefore Moral (not Ethical) qualities. You would chose not to reflag yourself as Canadian because it would make you feel guilty about being Disloyal, and Unpatriotic.

Flagging as American may attract danger, which could have been easily avoided by reflagging. This is Courageous, but in a misdirected, excessive, (hence unvirtuous) way.

Moral men act with Loyalty and Patriotism.

An Ethical man would be concerned about travelling safely and meeting people in a way that allowed them to evaluate him on the content of his character, rather than his country. Reflagging is Prudent, therefore Virtuous, therefore Ethical.

Ethical men act with Prudence, Humility, Patience, Tolerance, Forebarance, and Fortitude.

  4. Yes!  If you are too embarrassed to admit that you are American, then isn't there a problem there?   What about the the "home of the brave," or is that only when it suits you?  Your national pride is strong enough at home, why not be honest about it elsewhere?

Maybe if more Americans behaved appropriately while travelling (and a competent president in the headlines wouldn't hurt either), there would be no NEED to conceal your nationality.  I really do feel sorry for those of you out there (probably the majority) whose reputation has been tainted by others who perpetuate the negative American sterotypes.

  5. I do see a legit reason behind doing that. I personally think it is best to try and dress and much in style according to the country you are travelling to and wear no flags. I have been overseas alot and people will pick a fight with you for any reason not jsut because you are an american. Plus even if you did get in a fight with someone who thought you were american even though you were wearing the flag they probably wouldnt care if you say you are canadian they will still pick a fight with you.
