Question:

Is it frowned upon to golf with someone who doesn't have their own set of clubs?

I am an amateur golfer and I want to take my wife golfing to a local course. The course is nice, but more mid-level than high-end. She doesn't have a set of clubs, but I think we could move pretty quickly by sharing clubs. Do you think this is ok, or do courses frown upon both people not having a set of clubs?

  1. That should be covered by course rules. I know every course I've played has addressed that issue and in almost every case each player is required to have their own set of clubs.

If in doubt ask the folks at the pro shop or Marshall/ranger and they will be able to tell you.

FWIW; it's not a good idea to share clubs for a complete round. The occasional shot her or there to try out a friends new club is different but playing a whole round is not looked upon with favor.

  2. It is frowned upon.  But most courses will have some ladies rental clubs available and are usually not too expensive so that might be a solution.  While you may move along at a normal pace sharing, the appearance of it from the group behind is that you are taking a lot of time running back and forth from one ball to the other with the bag of clubs.  It is also an indication that she probably doesn't know how to play or she would have her own clubs so that scares the people behind you that they have to follow a rank beginner.  Most clubs will state in their rules that each player must have their own set of clubs along with proper attire etc.

  3. Generally Speaking, a player should have his own set of clubs when playing.  Mainly, because speed of play (think sharing a putter back and forth at least 18 times).

If sharing a cart, sharing clubs is not as big of a deal as compared to walking.  Again, the putter is the biggest hindrance.

  4. It also gives the appearance that only one person paid to play. I saw a couple doing it Saturday. She was in a skirt and flip flops so I am pretty sure she didn't pay.

  5. It would be frowned upon because it will almost certainly slow you down, and they won't believe that it won't.   Most course will rent a set of clubs to you.

  6. that sound like a good ideal but too many frowning faces. all the golf course I have played at required you to have your own set of clubs or minimal 5 clubs to play. or you can rent a set of clubs.

what will you do when both of you need to used the same club? but other golfers feel it will slow the group down (some groups are slow as it is).
