Question:

Is it g*y to play the flute? (MALE) ?

I just came to America( I'm Korean) and I was thinking of joining the Orchestra or maybe the marching band. However, some of my Korean friends tell me that it is considered to be g*y if a male plays flute.

This was surprising to hear because back in my country mostly the males play the flute. I have learned 5 years playing the Western flute (IT IS NOT THE SKIN FLUTE) and I have played the Traditional Korean flute called Dae gum and Danso both for about 4years.

Now, do you really think that it is g*y for a male to play the flute? Or do you have people around you who think so? It will be sad but I could join other clubs if necessary. I already have a hard time adjusting to a new school environment and I will not risk being perceived as g*y

  1. h**l no, its a musical instrument. a lot of girls like guys that are into music. :)

  2. yes it is an immature american stereotype, but your friend should not fear a stereotype-he should just play and enjoy his music. Tell him to look at the bright side, he will be in a section that is dominated by girls-think of the possibilities! In all my years of playing in, and directing bands, the true "g*y" guys I have met  have been sax, clarinet, bassoon, & drummers. (Not flautists).

  3. If anyone gives you a hard time, tell them you get to hang out in a section with tons of cute girls, and they all fight over you. Many people do call male flutes are g*y, but will drop it when you prove your talent. I have known two PICCOLO (and flute) players who were male and they were first and second chairs in two separate bands. No one gave either of them a hard time.

Also, you should absolutely join marching band. You spend tons of time practicing, and therefore, with the people. You will find yourself with a huge new family, and it is a great experience all around. Some marching bands even compete!

  4. Ugh...why do you use g*y like that? That's so stupid....and for the record, so are your friends. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoiSIiIpk...

I mean come on. Unless you mean Is it happy to play the flute? Then yes, flutes are very happy. Do what YOU wanna do! Don't listen to your idiot "friends". Either be sad all year because you didn't do something you want to do and then be able to think " Oh ****, they don't get called g*y." Or DO IT and get smarter friends.

  5. No. I have known a few straight males who played the flute.

Furthermore, tell your friends to stop stereotyping. It's offensive to the g*y community and their straight allies. Get educated, for your sake and everyone else's.

  6. It would only be g*y behavior if you enjoyed playing the skin flute.

  7. Definatly not! I think boys that enjoy music are awesome.

If you enjoy playing the flute don't let your peers stop you doing what you love because they think it isnt masculine enough!

Let them try o tell you that when your huge around the world, famous for playing the most beautiful instrument going...getting all the ladies :D

    haha.

    Its not g*y.

    Its magic.

  8. Yes.  And g*y people also play electric guitar, tuba, piano, trumpet, drums, diggereedoo, violin, xylophone, maracas, saxaphone, harmonica, ocarina, vibes, conga, kalimba, and the saw, along with a multitude of other instruments.

    Your "friends" are fools.

I could just as easily say that THEY are "g*y" for believing that, but, that would be an insult to my g*y friends.

  9. It's only g*y if you play it with your butt while wearing leather chaps.  Even then, it's not as g*y as the French Horn.

  10. if it's g*y for boys to play flute, would it be l***o for girls to play the drums?

    heck no!

ofcourse it ISN'T g*y. it's perfectly fine for you to play the flute. i would deff join the marching band. :)

marching band is so much fun, and you make so many friends. it's an amazing experience that you should totally give a try!

welcome to America! (i'm half asian)

    :)

  11. Nope, if that's what you play then that's it. Jethro Tull ring a bell. They were famous because of the flute.
