Question:

Is it going to be enough cake?

For my wedding the guest list is approx. 90 people. For the cake, the top layer is a 6" round, the second layer is 9" square, and the third layer is a 12" round. Do you think it's going to be enough cake for all or our guests? If not, what would you suggest?

  1. That will be fine. Half of the guests never eat the cake anyways as they are too filled from the food. You will have plenty.

  2. Definitely not enough for 90 people.  Call several bakeries to get an idea of what size you will need.

  3. look here at wilton cake cutting chart. And remember when you cut the cake the is for your guess to taste not to make a meal out of it..so the slice don't have to be that big..

  4. I am pretty sure you'll be fine. I had 80 people with about that size cake and the 12 round square and part of the 9 was left over and wasted. Esp. if you're having a big dinner, appetizers, drinks etc.

  5. Based on a 1" x 2" x 4" slice of cake-

    6" round -   14 Guests

    9" square - 40 Guests

    12" round-  56 Guests

    Total- 110 slices

  6. This website has a guide for cutting wedding cakes and how much cake you'll need to serve any number of guests.

Keep in mind, tradition says to keep the top tier to freeze and eat on your one-year anniversary. If you plan on doing this, the top tier isn't counted in your serving count.

If you keep and freeze your top tier, the cake should serve about 70-75 people. If you cut and serve your top tier, it should serve 80-85.

Also consider that not everyone will eat the cake and that your mom could also make a sheet cake to cut and serve to guests in the event that the decorated cake is not enough. Once it's cut, your guests will not know that it was not from the cake that they saw you and your groom ceremoniously cut.

  7. Based on the sizes that my cake bakery recommended, you'd need more than that.  Here are the sizes that they suggest:

    5” 7” 10” 12” round, serves 60 people

    5” 7” 10” 12” 14” round, serves 100 people

Squares are a little larger than circles, and a 9" square is pretty equivalent to a 10" round, but you would still need more layers.

  8. Thats the size of cake I am having and it is feeding 150.

  9. If you are going to have other food I would say yes for the cake. The guest would fill up on the food and not all the cake would be eaten. If you wanted to your mom could make two sheet cakes to go with it. I just know that when our daughter got married the lady who made her cake suggested not to get a really big cake if you are having food . She was right. Her cake was gorgeous and the right amount we just had a little bit left over. There were 200 guest.
