I am going to Winterberg, Germany on 02.01.2007 and I was hoping to go Skiing. I bought all the gear but now it looks like that there isn't going to be any snow as it is still too warm (--> that's global warming for you). Last year there was tons of snow!!!

At the moment everything looks still green as you can see on these webcams: http://www.winterberg.de/tourismus_de/Informationen_und_Service/Webcams/index.php?navanchor=1010015

  1. I know Winterberg in Sauerland. It 's not really an International skiing resort. Only few tracks below 800 m. It's only appropriate for a day trip, if you live in köln, for instance.

you should rather go to an higher place, if possible.

  2. Temperatures dropped a bit lately but due to a prevailing high pressure area any precipitation within the next days is unlikely. Forecasts for the next 7 days predict slightly lower temperatures especially during nights and in lower altitudes (the inversion causes milder temperatures on mountains).

At the moment there isn't much hope for you having snow in Winterberg - last winter was rather an exception. But you should ask again next week: the weather condition might change and any forecast longer than a few days is usually like rolling dices...

  3. If you mean Winterberg in Bavaria (Bayern), we stayed for several days in Inzell (near Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg, on the edge of the Alps) last week and it started to snow as we arrived.  Sufficiently for the snow ploughs to be out and doing their stuff.  I don't know how far Winterberg is from the Alps, but certainly they have had snow, it's just whether they have had enough.  We also took a train trip through Kitzbühel and the Tyrol and the higher stretches were all white, not green.

My guess - and it is only a guess - is that it will snow, but you may have to find a higher altitude resort for proper skiing.

  4. You are right, I can feel here in Germany global warming. This year is not much snow, just up an up on the alps. I guess it's changing in January and I hope until you are here we have some snow. If not you can still enjoy your trip. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year....
