Is it good or bad to practice your swing in the driving range while being sore?

I guess I have 2 parts to my question.

1. I have just started playing golf for the first time. I am 26 years old. I have been taking tips from my friends who have been playing since they where kids. I after about a week or so, my left forearm, wrist and back started to get sore (I'm right-handed). There is actually a light sharp pain in my left elbow joint when I try to fully extend my left arm. Does this mean my swing form is incorrect?

2. I can officially admit that I love this game and I am addicted to it. I just played my first 9 holes and I love the game even more. However, after about 4 weeks of playing my left forearm and wrist remains sore. I know I should stop and let it heal, but I always hear practicing everyday will improve your game. I should mention that I am not hitting over 100 balls everytime I visit the driving range. The most I would do is about 50. Is it good to practice your swing when your sore?

  1. The old saying, "No pain no gain" doesn't usually hold much weight. That said, being sore when taking up a new activity is to be expected while your muscles get used to the new motions and work.

What jumped out at me was the "light sharp pain" in your elbow. Sore is one thing, and a sharp pain could be nothing to get too excited about - but it could also be the first sign of something going wrong.

Give yourself some time to heal. If you want to keep working your game, concentrate on putting.

  2. When sore, only go out every other day and only hit 50, not 100.

You are training your body to use different muscles, so those joints will hurt.

The left wrist is not one I had. Check your swing with a golf pro and that way you will not have to "unlearn bad habits" later.

    Good luck and have fun

PS. best way to knock a lot of strokes off your score card is on the practise putting green. Get a feel of howhard to hit it to get within 3 feet of the hole from the edge of the green

  3. I say no. How can you learn and groove a proper golf swing if your movement is restricted by a sore elbow. Let your elbow heal and before you go back hitting balls go see a pro to make sure you are swinging the club correctly. I don't remember hurting that bad when I first started taking up the game.

  4. Being sore from recently taking up golf and playing your first 9 holes is quite normal. Whenever you go out to play golf, be sure to stretch out. Did your golf buddy tell you that? I golf several times a week, and I ALWAYS stretch out with my 7-iron before I swing at anything. It's quite okay to practice your golf-swing when you are sore. The more you play, the quicker the soreness will disappear. Just stretch out before you play -- I can't say that enough. Also, remember that golf is a game of finesse ----don't try to kill the ball. It won't go farther just because you swing harder. It's all about timing and technique. Have fun and keep 'em outta' the sandbox.

Note: Take it easy for a while. Go out to the driving range (stretch out right before you swing at any balls) and hit a bucket o' balls. Also go over to the putting green and practice your putting and chipping.
