  1. A cage is the best bet to keep him from tearing everything up until he learns what you expect. It will also help in housebreaking  him. Dogs will seldom dirty where they sleep. You do need to make sure he has plenty of room to move around and fresh water. You do not have to feed your pup while you are gone. Put something in his cage that has your scent on it. Also give him chew toys. He cries because he misses you, not because of the cage. If you work more than eight hours you might want to  consider finding him someone who will be able to spend more time with him. always be sure to take him outside as soon as you get in and let him potty and exercise.

  2. work up to it. h**l be fine. sometimes i have to leave mine for a while and shes fine. make sure you dont have to force your dog in there and make sure he associates it with treats or something good.

  3. maybe just lock him in one room, like a kitchen or bedroom, where he has access to food and water. then he has more room, but he wont bother your cats

  4. It depends...how many hours are you going to be gone for? It's not fair to lock the dog up longer than 2 hours..you wouldn't like to be confined for that long would you?

I would try sticking your dog in the bathroom with food/water/toy/bed.The dog can stretch it's legs and not potty on itself  or hold it if it needs to go.

  5. With my dog she bark at first then she fell asleep in hers, But she was 6th months old.

  6. YOU SHOULD OF THOUGHT ABOUT THAT BEFORE YOU GOT THIS DOG,YOUR GOING TO MAKE HIM SUFFER FOR WHAT?HE DIDN'T DO ANY THING.THE NEXT TIME YOU THINK ABOUT GETTING ANOTHER ANIMAL,DO JUST THAT,THINK ABOUT IT!!!

  7. What your pup is doing is natural.  We got a new pup Feb this year and we had the crate to put him in at night and for during the day.

I don't work (husband does) but I just couldn't see crating him when I made short trips during the day since he was in it all night.

We bought a play yard (one for children-cheaper than the ones for pets) and when I do my short trips or we'll be gone for an extended period of time, we put him in his play yard with water and a toy in our kitchen.  If he were to have an accident it would be easier to clean up the mess.  He's never made a mess in there and he can see everything that's going on (we have 2 other dogs & a cat) and he also has room to move around.  He's 8 months old now and when the play yard gets unfolded he walks right in with out any problems.  He's no longer crated at night either.

  8. Its fine to crate him. Suck it up and ignore the whineing. Thats the only thing to do. All of our dogs are crate trained and know what they two words "Pen up." Mean.. They all run and lay in their crates when you say this.

  9. WELL put down some pee pads in the bathroom, and close the door. That way he will not get into any thing to hurt him.  he will get over the crying thing. put some stuffed toys in for him to play with. and lots of chew toys.

  10. I'm a firm believer in crate training, all 5 of my dogs are crated at night and so are the fosters I have.

However, to crate a 10 week old dog all day long is cruel.

Put him in a room where he can't do much damage, leave food and water, toys, chewies for him.

It's a shame you got a puppy just now, doesn't sound ideal, puppies need a lot of time, attention and training - sounds as if you have your hands full already.

Secure him in a room by himself, or get an x-pen, set that up and put him in it.

You know a pup that age cannot hold it all day, he needs weewee pads unless someone comes in and let's him out during the day.   To keep him in a crate with piddle and p**p and nothing to do is little better than having him in a puppy mill --- not good.   Make better arrangements for him.

  11. I wouldn't put a dog in a cage unless the cage was kennel size and I doubt that it is!  What would be better if you can confine him to the kitchen or if you have a large enough bathroom! (kitchen is a much better idea, in a bathroom you are closing the door, and there is not really enough room!

That is a long time for an animal to stay by himself, if you work part time and gone for about 4 hrs, not much of a problem, but all day! But if he is in a cage and it is small that is not good either! For any length of time! I opt for the kitchen, much more humane!

I have bought 2 super xpens for my puppies it works out great! (You can find these at walmart then run about $59.00) worth every penny and some times they have sales on them you can set this up in the kitchen so the lineoleum will be easy to clean up!  You will be very happy if you decide to purchase one of these, good luck!

    Cheers!

  12. A 10 week old dog is not physically capable of holding his bladder or his bowels for a full work day, so no, it would be very bad to keep him crated while you are away at work.  It would be best to have someone come over every few hours (a 10 week old puppy can only "hold it" for about 3 hours at most).  If that's not a possibility, then puppy-proofing a small room that an easily be cleaned (bathrooms and kitchens often work well for this purpose) and keeping the puppy there while you are at work.

  13. A puppy is going to cry in the crate until he learns that crying is not going to get him out.

However, the time period is far more important for a 10 week old puppy.  You cannot leave a puppy that young in a crate all day and expect everything to be fine.  An adult, fine, but not a puppy.

You need to come home regularly to let the dog out, hire a pet sitter, or take him to daycare until he's older.

read the link its about house training.. you MUST ignore them when they cry - or you teach them to cry...

you should have thought out the situation BEFORE you got the pup.. but read the link it helps with this too.. maybe can you come home at lunch?
