im going to be a junior next year, and at the beginning of the summer i decided to quit field hockey. I'm still not positive, but last night i decided that i think i will play. However i've gone the whole summer not training, and the past three weeks my team has been running 2-3 miles a day informally.

SOO because i'm a horrible runner, i'm trying to pack in as much training as i can before tryouts on monday. so now i'm running 2-3 miles in the morning with my team, and then i want to run another 2 in the evening alone. Is this healthy/ will it help??

thanks so much for reading this!

  1. healthy for endurance and cardio, sure.

healthy for the ankles and knees, not so much.

if you can, try to through in some swimming as well. no impact, good muscle/resistance training. running in the water is great for the legs too.

  2. Why do people run? Walking is just as effective.

  3. Honestly, you're better off training with the team in terms of running and doing some strength later on in the evening. You will most likely over-train yourself by running that much and possibly get injured.

I'm an experienced runner who severely over-trained for running a half-marathon and now I have a chronic Tendinosis in my right leg.

Always alternate. always. Studies have shown that running less is actually more efficient. Distance running is good, but you could suggest switching things up, for example, 4/200 metre sprints every now and then. Speed training is very important too. Also, if you get accustomed to running 2-3 miles a day, it will no longer be beneficial because your body will get used to it. Don't forget plyometrics and cross-training! Swimming and yoga are excellent choices because they are low impact with just as much intensity as running. Hope this helps, good luck!

  4. Yeah, that will definitely help! But, for a sport like hockey, you're going to want to train for both speed and endurance. Ask your coach.

  5. You could also probably use a little ice time. Go to your local rink and get the schedules for public skate/ stick time.
