the IRA (Irish Republican Army) are an organisation that wanted Irish independence from the UK. In the 1990s there were a lot of terrorist attacks in the UK by them (eg car bombs, a bit like Al-Qaeda now) as a protest against Northern Ireland being part of the UK. They are not, however, so active now.
