Is it haram to have braces?

Question

I have had braces for 2 years because my teeth were crooked, there was not much space between them to grow, and some other reasons.

Is this altering Allah's creation? I mean if I did not get braces, my teetrh might even be growing into my gum or there would most likely be some major health problem.'

Please help!!!

As long as the bracing is done to fix a problem, then it is allowed and there is nothing wrong with it.

Yes, it is permissible. If you are really in need of it then it is permissible.

Allaah says (which means): {And has not laid upon you in religion any hardship.}[Quran 22:78]

In Islam we are to take care of ourselves and not to hurt ourselves. like your case, if you do not get braces, you will be in problem and islam doesn;t want you to be in any problems regarding to your health. so it is indeed permissible to use braces. when you rinse your mouth for ablution, just rinse it well.

It is haram to get braces just to enhance your beauty.  If it is for medical reasons on the other hand, then it is acceptable.

You're looking wayyyyy too much into "altering Allah's creation."

By that logic, don't ever cut your hair or your nails.

You are wearing braces for health reasons.  That's not only permissable but encouraged to be in better health.  There is Nothing wrong with wearing braces, at all.

No. 5547  - Narrated 'Abdullah:

Allah has cursed those women who practise tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those who remove their face hairs, and those who create a space between their teeth artificially to look beautiful, and such women as change the features created by Allah. Why then should I not curse those whom the Prophet has cursed? And that is in Allah's Book. i.e. His Saying: 'And what the Apostle gives you take it and what he forbids you abstain (from it).' (59.7)

So what we know is if it is for the purpose of beauty, which is the main reason why people do it, then this is not good.  

But when it is for good hygene, it is a good thing.  

Allah knows the intentions.

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan was asked about straightening the teeth and he said, If that is necessary, such as if there is some deformity in the teeth that needs to be corrected, then there is nothing wrong with it. But if it is not necessary then it is not permitted., rather it is forbidden to file the teeth or make gaps between them for the purpose of beautification, and there is a strong warning against doing so because it is a kind of messing about and altering the creation of Allaah.

But if this is done for the purpose of medical treatment, or to remove a deformity or for some other need, such as when a person is unable to eat unless his teeth are corrected, then there is nothing wrong with that.

With regard to removing extra teeth, Shaykh Ibn Jibreen said: there is nothing wrong with removing an extra tooth, because it deforms the appearance and makes things difficult for a person… but it is not permissible to file them or make gaps between them because of the prohibition on doing so.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Beautification is of two types: beautification that is aimed at removing a fault due to an accident etc – there is nothing wrong with this, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told a man whose nose had been cut off in battle to get a nose made of gold.

The second type is aimed at increasing beauty, which is not aimed at removing a fault, rather the aim is to make someone more beautiful. This is haraam and is not permissible because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the woman who plucks eyebrows, the one who has that done, the woman who does tattoos and the woman who has that done, the woman who adds hair extensions and the woman who has that done, because this is aimed at increasing beauty and is not removing a fault.

Fatawa ‘Ulama’ al-Balad al-Haraam (p. 575).

A large gap between the teeth is an abnormality which some people are affected by. It is permissible for one who has such a fault in his teeth, or other faults, to correct it, and there is no sin on him for doing that, in sha Allaah.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Muslim (13/107):

With regard to the phrase “women who file teeth”, what is meant is doing that for the purpose of beautification. This indicates that that which is haraam is that which is done for the purpose of beautification. But if there is a need for that for medical reasons or to correct a fault in the teeth etc, there is nothing wrong with that. And Allaah knows best. End quote.

The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas (24/75) was asked: If I have two teeth that are long, is it permissible for me to make them level with the other teeth?

They replied:

If they are so long that they bother you, they you may remove that which is bothering you only. End quote.
