I have a BSN degree and I really am thinking of taking pre-med because I want to be a doctor. But nursing is not the traditional pre-med course. How many requisites am I missing? And do the people who took pre-med have an intellectual advantage over me? They are pre-med courses for a reason...

  1. They aren't pre-med courses for a reason. They're the same courses taken by people who wind up as chemists and high school science teachers. That track is just an efficient way to get the requisite courses done. The problem is that some of them are pre-requisites for others. I'm sure you've already noted a lot of your courses were tracked towards nursing and allied health, and won't do. But that's only a disadvantage in that you'll  have to go through some of the same material several times.

Your problems are compounded by the fact that there is no single block of courses for all medical schools. You'll want to pick a list of potential medical schools and check the requirements for admission to each individually. You can do that, and find a lot more information as well, at http://www.aamc.org .

  2. pre med courses are not a big deal. anybody with a little interest in science and average intelligence should get through them.

  3. I would suggest you visit with the local dean of admissions of a medical school and discuss what courses you would have to take in preparation for med school...remember you need to allow at least 2 years, maybe three, to complete the course work, take the MCATS and apply...go for it!

typically you need a minimum of  2years of chemistry, year of physics, year of biology each with labs, calculus.

  4. Good luck.
