  1. All baseball positions take work and dedication to be good at, catching isnt the easiest thing to do. You have to have good arm strength and good leg strength and good knowledge of what pitches to throw in what situations.

  2. Playing catcher is the most physical position on the field.  You are involved in every play, sometimes more than once, you are at risk of getting hurt on every pitch, after you catch the pitch you may need to try to throw the runner out, you are supposed to run down the line to back up the play at first every time, you need to squat all day.  You may have to block the plate as a runner comes in who will try his hardest to separate you and the ball

Besides all that, you have to call the pitches, done best when you know all about the batter and your pitcher.  The call the catcher's gear the tools of ignorance.  I never understood that.

It may be the hardest position to play.  And probably the least glamorous and appreciated.

  3. Where were you when Pete Rose ran over Ray Fosse in the 12th inning of the 1970 All-Star Game.

Pete said later, that all he wanted to do was score the winning run. He did.

Fosse was ruined as a star player and although he played for a few more years, was never again an All Star.

Being a catcher is a brutal job.

The protective gear that catchers wear are called the "Tools of Ignorance".

  4. No positions are easy but injury wise, catching takes a toll on the knees, ankles and sometimes the body. The mental aspects include, pitch selection and being in tune with your pitcher. A catcher not only has to catch a ball at a high speed but also has to block the plate sometimes to get run over by the runner (MLB), still not easy.

  5. Its not as bad as you think now dont listen to me  because I'm Left-Handed

  6. Catcher is arguably the hardest position to play in the field. They have the call the pitches, block balls in the dirt, be fast enough to throw out baserunners, block the plate and potentially take a hit from a baserunner running into them, direct where the ball is going when coming in from the outfield, line cutoffs, catch foul balls, beat the runner down the line and backup first base in certain situations, call out bunt/1st and 3rd plays, etc etc.

  7. if you are fit and strong and have the ability to squat for a long period of time then, no

  8. it is. it is very demanding physically and its the only position where you're always in the game no matter what situation in the field. you handle the pitching staff and the baserunners. youre the only one who is in a squat position all game long.

  9. Its depends it gets hard as you go up because pitches get faster and pitchers throw moving pitches. Runners become faster. Bases you throw to become farther away. So yea it is hard. As it is hard to play other positions in baseball also

  10. Yes you call every pitch in the game. You also have to memorize who throws what along with signs. Language barrier most players don't speak English. Strong arm to throw out runners. Your on your knees for 3 hours. And most managers still expect you to hit 290. Catchers retire earlier than any other players.

  11. Depends on what level you are talking about.  What are you talking about catcher in general, or a specific age group?
