I know to obviously shut off gas before working on it. Would I use a regular pipe wrench? I don't think they can be sodered because that takes a blow torch.

I need a new water heater.

  1. always use black pipe for your gas lines. you can use regular pipe wrenches to tighten or loosen the pipes. seal the pipes with  gas line teflon tape (it has a yellow color to it, is a little more expensive than regular tape but well worth the money). make sure you shut off all the gas before you start disconnecting any pipes. Upon completion of your job, make sure you soap test all joints to check for leaks. you can also use the flexible lines for you water heater

  2. Don't be cheap and hire a professional if you aren't sure.

Natural Gas & Propane aren't worth the property damage and potential loss of life if you s***w something up.

  3. Yes, use a regular pipe wrench.  When putting pipes back together, make sure you get the teflon tape that is designed for gas connections and not the stuff for water pipes.  Gas tape is yellow and thicker.

You are correct about soldering, but there should be no need to solder any gas pipe.  All should be threaded on the end and screwed into connectors, elbows, etc.

  4. First make sure the gas is off (you know that part). Get two pipe wrenches and a small can of Pipe-dope (the teflon paste for the threads). Now, at the heater itself, there is a union in the center of a run of pipe...it is larger than the pipe. You need to undo that first. With any luck, the new water heater is going to be the same size with the controls in the same place and you wont have to run out to pick up any nipples to use as extra piping. Good luck!

  5. Many areas require a permit and/or a licensed person to work on gas lines. Should there be a problem (fire), your insurance would not be required to pay.

  6. Great, because you can blow yourself up, or burn your house down. while it isnt hard, dont do this job yourself unlit you become experienanced at it. Besides, your insurance wont cover if ou burned your house down.
