Question:

Is it hard to file your own taxes? I'd like to learn how to file my own taxes...?

The last few years, I've had a 3rd party company file my income taxes. It's a standard return (employee status). However, looking back, I realize I probably overpaid for this service. I think next time I will go with a less expensive company (or person) to do my taxes.

However, I want to know if it's difficult to file your own taxes? I thought about doing it myself before, but was afraid of making a mistake (losing refund money, or not paying if I owe) and also all the tax forms seemed confusing.

Has anybody filed their own taxes (I live in Canada)? Is it easy to do - is there some website or software that will walk me through it? It is more economical to do it on your own? Please let me know.

  1. If your tax situation isn't complicated, then yes, it's easy to do yourself.  Especially if you use an online service or software.  By using an online serivce or software, they walk you through each step and  just answer the questions.  When finished the service/software will recheck to make sure there's no errors.

You can always check out and test drive a service and see.

If you have 2007's tax return handy, you can go to QuickTax.com (Canadian version of TurboTax) and try it out.

H & R Block and Liberty Tax also have Canadian tax services available.

You may even find you can qualify to prepare and e-file your return for free.
