Is it hard to get into Rescue Swimmer school?

I think I would really enjoy being a rescue swimmer, I have always loved the water, and I have always been interested in rescue operations. I just don't really know what I'm up for. I know it will be tough and everything, but is it hard to actually get into the school? I heard somewhere that people wait for 2 years to get into the school, but why did they have to wait? Basically I wanna know if there is anything I can do before going into the coast guard to better my chances at getting into the school, besides running and swimming and running some more.

  1. Not to sound like a kill joy or anything, but going to AST (aviation survival technician) A School is VERY competitive. The waiting list for AST school is about 2 years. And on top of that, only 365 new rescue swimmers graduate the school every year. For more info go to: www.gocoastguard.com.
