It could be confusing if you are inexperienced.  Many thermostats come with options that you may not have on your system.  Programmable thermostats are often powere by the transformer in your furnace.  

If you have a standard thermostat in your house right now you may need to run an extra wire to tap the other side of the transformer to power your programmable thermostat.  This is going to be very confusing for you.  In addition to that many contractors do not necessarily use the same exact color of wires.  Sometimes they substitute blue for yellow etc.  It just depends what they have on their truck cometimes.

I recommend this.  If you do buy a programmable and you are replacing a standard one then buy a programmable that takes batteries and is not powered off the transformer in your furnace.  This should save you some headache.  You may have to change batteries once or twice a year, but hey.  That's better than calling a contractor to come save your butt after you s***w up the installation of a programmable thermostat when you have no idea what you are doing.
