I'm fifteen and my senior year I'm probably going to be an exchange student and travel to japan. Now i was wondering if it would be hard if i just went to japan with minimal prior language experience. Would it be hard for me to understand? Or will i be able to learn very quickly?

  1. Depends on what language you speak now. If you speak English (which you obviously do), then yes.

  2. Personally I recommend at least a couple years of studying before heading off to Japan, especially as an exchange student.

Even though I speak Chinese and have an acceptable degree of proficiency in Chinese characters, Japanese still proved a challenge for the first year or two.

But if you really have a knack for languages, then perhaps you could just learn a handful of phrases, fly to Japan and delve into hardcore studying there, and you might just be successful.

    Good luck!

  3. you should start to study. you dont have to be fluent in japanese but you should just know how to get around in a polite way. this website is very helpful: www.thejapanesepage.com

  4. If I were you I would checkout rosetta stone. Could be a big help and save you a big headache.Good luck

  5. Start learning now. You don't want to be dumbfounded when you enter Japan.

The more practice you get, the better off you'll be in Japan. Good luck to you.

As Kashizui even stated, he's Chinese and kanji is difficult for him.  Just because 凓 exists in both, they don't have the same meaning.

It's preposterous to say, "because you speak English it'll be hard" or "It's easier for Chinese people."  It's not easy because Japanese isn't like ANY language. It's unique and key to Japan.  Kanji today really has nothing to do with Japan. So what, some characters have the same meaning: 愛電人etc, but many don't. Many Chinese have updated their character strokes, making it more simplified, etc. I heard that 電 is now like 电

    Good luck~ ganbatte.
