Is it hard to learn the Bass Clef when I already know the Treble Clef?

I play the Alto Saxophone (which uses a treble clef) and I want to learn how to play the bass guitar (which uses a bass clef). Is it going to be difficult to learn one clef when I'm used to another?

  1. If you know sheet music already, it should be a snap.  The GBDF just moves down a line for the bass clef

  2. No. Look at it this way: You learned the treble clef didn't you? There is plenty of room in your brain for both. Any piano player knows both clefs and I believe ALL musicians, regardless of instrument played, SHOULD know both. It will make your life easier all the way around, and further ensure success when playing with other musicians.

  3. Ahh, another saxophonist. Well, I have experience in a predicament such as yours.  I had to learn a tenor sax

(treble clef) when I only knew bassoon (bass/tenor clef).  The way that I tackled this problem was by starting all the way from scratch (thats right, back to "Mary had a Little Lamb").  It worked out quiet well for me and I hope it works well for you.

P.S.(going back to your original clef shouldn't be too much of a problem, but if it is, then work on it little by little and it'll be back to normal in no time)
