I've never gone skiing before but I want to! Is it hard?

My friend told me (after she went skiing) that it's hard to balance and stand up.

  1. im sure it is when you start. i cant remember, ive been skiing since i was 4. i tried snowboarding but went right back to siing cause its just that much better : )  stick to the bunny slope and get some tips from your friend and before you know it youll be great

  2. snowboarding is better!

  3. at first and then once you get used to it its not

  4. It gets easier each time you go down the hill.

It's best to take a lesson, or at least read up a bit or go with someone who already knows what they're doing.

The first few times that you fall, it can be a little hard to figure out how to get up.  But seriously, after half a day you'll be comfortable on the bunny hill at least.  Don't expect to ski the black diamonds for a long time, though.

Just, the most important things to remember are:

    1) If you get out of control, fall on purpose.  It's much better than waiting until you're going faster and faster and then falling, or hitting someone/something.

    2) Pace yourself.  Don't try to be an expert after the first day - that's a good way to get hurt.  I would say maybe 10-25% of first-day skiers might be ready for an easy blue hill as the last run of the first day.  I've seen and heard of far too many idiots hurt themselves because they tried to go down a black mogul run or do jumps in the terrain park when they don't know what they're doing yet.

I'm not trying to scare you or anything - skiing is a great sport and it's tons of fun.  But, like anything else in life, if you act stupid you can get hurt.  I speak from experience - one day I hit my head on the ice pretty hard.  I felt a little woozy and, smartly, went to sit down in the lodge.  But, after 2 hours I said "I'm fine, I can go back out" and promptly broke my shoulder.  I didn't ski for 3 years after that, but now I've gotten back into it, and am starting to race.

  5. its not very hard if you are coordinated. balance isnt very hard, stopping is the hardest part and that is pretty easy. to everyone that says go snowboarding, i say go skiing first then once you have mastered skiing, then try snowboarding if you want. i do both and lately have perfered skiing because i go off jumps and do tricks. so try skiing, youll love it

  6. take some lessons so you know what your doing. After that, It should be as easy as riding a bike!! skiing is the best. I snowboard and ski, and if I had to pick between the 2, it would be skiing.

  7. Don't listen to the Run Rubbish aka Boarders, Skiing is a great and graceful sport, that is easy to learn if you are in reasonable shape.

  8. After you get the basics it gets easier. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE LESSONS!!!!!!!!!!!!! it'll be easier that way instead of learning on your own........plus its safer and everyone on the hill that can already ski won't hate you... believe me i hate seeing ppl trying to ski without lessons.

    yuck out of control

  9. well, it is a little hard to stand up at first, i have only gone 5 times, and its not hard at all, and its really fun!!!! Boyne highlands in michigan is the bomb!

  10. It depends on the place you are skiing and the snow there...if it is icy it is harder

I usually go to Colorado Keystone once a year and I love to ski

It depends on attitude, if you get flustered it becomes harder and it can also be harder if you worry to much

Stay on the greens and later on blue, ski is like rollorblading a bit except skiing is easier

(you dont have to have a lot of balance and standing is easy its just like on your feet except you move when you go down hill)

    Just relax and have fun

  11. it is easy and fun,

but stick to the bunny slope your first time

Ask your friend for some tips,

    Good Luck

  12. dont listen to anybody that says snowboarding is easier skiing is waayyy easier and you can go faster and go in the treeeess you can pick skiing up much  faster and easier than snowboarding and dont listen to these people from iowa and michigan about skiing they've never been to a real mountain come out west to colorado and ill show real skiing

  13. IT ALL DEPENDS WHETHER YOU ARE TALKING SNOW OR WATER . SNOW SKIING

IS REALLY HARD TO GET THE HANG OF IT AND HAS CAUSED MANY A BROKEN LEG OR ANKLE . WATER SKIING ON THE OTHER HAND IS EASY TO LEARN AND IS A BALL . i HOPE THIS HELPS

  14. it is pretty easy but u have to start on a little hill

and practice a lot! i have been every winter in iowa since i was 9

  15. Hard? No, just takes a little practice. But here is the secret to make it easier:

    Be fearless.

Most poor skiers make things hard for themselves by sitting back and "hugging" the mountain. They're scared. If you can leave your fear behind, stay forward and engaged, it won't be that hard at all.

  16. Try the bunny hill if it's your first time. Keeping your balance isn't that hard though. I hear it's harder for snowboarding.

  17. no its not hard at all. i snowboard and ski. i love both but i think skiing is more fun in the park but overall on the trails and in powder and some jumps snowboarding is better. Skiing is a walk in the park.

    Proffesional review:

Skiing is easy to learn, harder to get better

Snowboarding is hard to learn, easy to get better

  18. just take lessons

    much harder than snowboarding

  19. Skiing is IMO  very easy when you are in condition.  Take lessons, boot fit is critical. The boot must be TIGHT around your foot and ankle, but not painful. The boot transmits every movement you make to the ski, if it does not, then you are wasting energy and fighting the equipment.  You learn by doing with an instructor that knows how to teach you to ski, take a series of lessons, 5 consecutive days is great,  1-2 hours each day.   If you get serious about skiing, spend some money on the best boot fit you can get, they will last for years, or until you outgrow them.  The boards are less important until you reach an intermediate level, you should rent them.

I want to try a board this season, but time is a big constraint.

Have fun this is a social sport as much as it's a snow sport.

I worry about water skiing, I might drown.

  20. yes

  21. skiing is hard for me too lol.. i cant pizza stop haha.. Try snowboarding.. you'll fall in love with it

  22. its not too hard to balance but when u are sitting down on the floor it is hard to stand up because ur skis are on and it makes ur feet big and akward. but believe me its all worth it. its hard at first but easy to get the hang of it. if ur on a bunny hill, (u MUST be on a bunny hill first if u have never been skeying ever) u should have someone there to catch u. hop i helped!

  23. Skiing is my favourite sport. I'm 13, and i've been doing it since i was two. i'm guessing your at least 12, so i think that you can do it, if a 2 yr  old could! LoL

But, on your first run it will be hard, but it becomes natural. you might also want to rent skiis.

You must also have a at least type 2 skier with you at all times.

:) Good luck! I'm sure everything will go just  fine, just remember that it isn't always easy at first, but you must'nt give up!

    Cheers,

    Melissa

  24. Well Skiing Is Pretty Hard I Suggest Snow Boarding Much Easier For Me But Takes A While And Confidece To Have Some Fun. But get Ready To Fall Just A Bit.
