Is it harder on a diesel motor to leave it running or shut it off when not driving it?

  1. If it's only gunna be left running a few mins between stops, just leave it running it won't hurt it and it will extend the life of the glow plugs.


  2. If it is a new car, it doesn't matter. My Alfa Romeo responds well also when shut off.

  3. It depends on how long.

    My pickup was diesel, always shut it off.

    Drove 18 wheelers, let them run most of the time.

  4. Letting a diesel run goes back to the old Detroit diesel motors.  When shut off hot they would crack a head every time.  New diesels don't have those issues.

  5. I gather your an american!

    Turn it off! Who leaves there car running!
